Melt 1/4 cup butter is sauce pan. Stir in 1 cup brown sugar until dissolved. Cool slightly. Beat in 1 egg and 1 tsp vanilla.
Sift, then measure 1/2 cup all-purpose flour. Resift with 1 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir into the butter mixture. Add 1/2 – 1 cup chopped nuts.
Pour into greased 8×8 pan. Bake at 350 F for about 25 minutes. Cut into bars.
